“If character is what you do when no one is watching, then sportsmanship is that conduct with everybody watching.” Bob Ley
At Sacred Heart RC Nursery & Primary School, our aim is to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school gospel values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We aim to provide them with a range of active experiences and clubs and ensure that our delivery of physical education allows children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We aim to ensure that there is a clear progression of transferrable skills being learnt and used. We aim to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and to make healthy choices whilst ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies.
In the Foundation stage PE is taught through the implementation of building and developing those key fundamental skills that are needed for children to progress in physical development. We have a clear understanding at Sacred Heart that the foundations of physical education begin in the Foundation Stage as our team develop those key fundamental skills that are developed and strengthened as children continue to engage in physical education in Key Stage 1 and 2.
We have a free flow environment where children can access the outdoor area daily. Within the outdoor area are a range of resources to develop children’s gross and fine motor skills.
Nursery have a thirty minute physical activity session with Mr Budd every day.
As the children move into Key Stage 1 the skills that they learnt in the Foundation Stage are built upon. They will: – Master basic movements such as running, jumping, skipping and hopping – Develop agiility and coordination skills and begin applying these to activities – Participate in team and competitive games – Explore movement and perform dances – Develop routine and sequence in athletics and gymnastics – Take part in outdoor adventureous activities
As the children are learning these skills they are encouraged to evaluate their performance, recognise their own successes and challenge themselves to achieve more. They also consider the importance of being healthy.
In Key Stage 2 the children use those skills that they have learnt in Key Stage 1 and apply these effectively to a range of activities. There is a big emphasize on applying skills and recognizing what skills they need for a particular sport or activity. The children in Key Stage 2 will;
– Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in combination – Play competitive games – Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance – Use compositional skills to create and perform dances – Engage in outdoor adventurous activities
As the children are developing these skills they are encouraged to evaluate their performance, recognize their own successes and challenge themselves to achieve more. They also consider the importance of being healthy.
As a coastal town, we know the importance of our pupils learning to swim. This year both Y5 and 6 will have swimming lessons at our neighbouring school, Oldway Primary. We aim to increase this to include lower KS2 in 2023-4 in addition to the National Curriculum requirements.
We subsidise a water sport experience for Y5s and ensure that the Y6s have a sea experience as part of their PGL timetable.
Sacred Heart are proud to be a part of the Torbay Sports Partnership. Being a part of this partnership allows children to compete in a range of competitions with other schools across the bay. It allows teachers and children from Primary school settings to work alongside secondary schools and specialist teachers to provide a range of Physical Education opportunities. Sacred Heart is partnered with Paignton Community College. The partnership enables opportunities for children to take part in a range of leveled competitions, receive support and have taught sessions by specialist teachers across a range of different sports, supports the staff at Sacred Heart in delivering well structured and purposeful Physical Education lessons and also provides the school with facilities and equipment for Physical Education in our school.
